Youth Efforts with our
Interact Clubs
Each of the
three high schools in Dublin has an Interact Club that was
founded by Dublin A.M. Rotary, the latest being Jerome High School beginning in 2004. Interact Clubs introduce the concept of
service to community in a high school setting with an emphasis on leadership
development. The Interact Clubs have faculty
advisors and Rotarian advisors, however, the students run the
organization. It is an amazing
opportunity for students to develop leadership skills. The Interact Clubs in Coffman and Scioto High Schools have been in operation for several
years and the Jerome HS Club began in 2004.
Shortly after 9/11, the Interact Club of Coffman raised over $1,000 for
relief in New York City through a very successful spaghetti supper called
“Dinner for Heros.” All area first
responders who assisted rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center were invited as guests of the
students. They subsequently have also
helped in the drives for winter clothing for children in Afghanistan and have
provided monitoring help for elementary school students for two years. Interact students have logged more than
10,000 volunteer hours since the program’s inception. The Interact Club of Scioto raised funds to
buy a new washer and dryer for Montana de Luz.
The club
has also sponsored high school students interested in ethics in the work place
by yearly selecting students for the District ethics contests. Such students give a short talk on the
application of the Four Way Test to their own school life and club members have
served on selection committees for over ten years.
Dublin AM has found in-bound exchange
students almost every year who have come from India, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Columbia and Brazil.
We have also participated in the Group Study Exchange programs for each
of the past District events. Two members
also served as out-going Team Leaders, one to India and the other to Japan.
